Metal Roof vs. Shingles: Which Is Right for Your Chico Home?

Metal Roof vs. Shingles: Which Is Right for Your Chico Home?

It is the question we hear more than any other at the kitchen table: should we go metal this time?

The short answer is that both are good roofs in Chico when they are installed as a complete system. Architectural shingles cost less up front and suit most homes and budgets. Metal costs more, lasts longer, sheds heat and embers well, and makes the most sense if you plan to stay put for 20 years or more.

The longer answer depends on your house, your neighborhood, and your plans. Here is how we walk homeowners through it.

The quick comparison

  • Up-front cost. Shingles cost less. Metal costs more, often double or more.
  • Typical life in the North Valley. Shingles: about 20 to 30 years. Metal: 40 years or more.
  • Fire rating. Both are Class A when installed as a complete assembly.
  • Summer heat. Shingles absorb more heat, though cool-rated colors help. Metal reflects heat well, especially lighter finishes.
  • Rain noise. Both are quiet on a home with solid decking and an insulated attic.
  • Repairs. Shingle repairs are easy and inexpensive. Metal needs repairs less often, but they are more specialized.
  • Look. Shingles fit nearly every Chico neighborhood. Metal suits modern, farmhouse, and foothill homes.

National cost guides such as HomeGuide put installed metal at roughly two to three times the cost of asphalt shingles per square foot. Your number depends on roof size, pitch, tear-off layers, and the metal profile you choose. We give a written price for both options when you ask, so you are comparing real numbers for your house.

How Chico's climate treats each roof

Chico does not have hail belts or hurricane seasons. What we have is harder to see and just as tough on a roof: long, dry, 100-degree summers, a north wind that shows up in every season, and 25 to 27 inches of rain that arrives almost all at once between November and April.

Summer heat

Heat and UV are what age a shingle roof here. The asphalt dries out, granules wash off, and the shingle loses flexibility. A shingle that might last 30 years in a mild coastal climate often gives you closer to 20 to 25 on a south-facing slope in the Valley. We cover this in detail in what 100-degree Chico summers do to your roof.

Metal does not break down from UV the way asphalt does. A quality painted finish fades slowly, and lighter colors reflect a large share of the sun's heat. That can make an upstairs bedroom noticeably more comfortable in July.

Both options can meet California's cool roof rule. Since January 1, 2026, most steep-slope residential reroofs in Climate Zone 11, which includes Chico, need a cool-rated product when more than half the roof is replaced. Many shingle lines offer cool-rated browns and grays. Metal qualifies easily.

Wildfire and embers

This is the reason many of our Forest Ranch, Paradise, Magalia, and north Chico customers ask about metal first.

Here is the honest part. A Class A architectural shingle system and a Class A metal system both carry the highest fire rating available. Neither one burns. What separates a fire-ready roof from a risky one is the whole assembly: the underlayment, the ember-resistant vents, the edges, and gutters that are not packed with pine needles.

Metal does have real advantages in the foothills. Standing seam panels have no exposed fasteners or gaps for embers to settle into, and the smooth surface sheds needles and leaves better than a textured shingle. If your home sits in a Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zone, it is worth a serious look. Our guide to wildfire-ready roofing in Butte County explains the Chapter 7A rules in full.

Winter rain and the north wind

Shingles handle Chico rain well when the underlayment and flashings are right. Their weak points are the same on every roof: pipe boots, chimney flashings, and valleys.

Metal sheds water fast and has far fewer seams. Standing seam panels run from ridge to eave in one piece, so there are no laps for wind-driven rain to work under. When the north wind really blows, a properly fastened metal roof holds tight. Shingles rated for high wind do well too, as long as they were nailed correctly. We see the difference after every big wind event, and we wrote about it in north wind roof damage.

"Isn't a metal roof loud in the rain?"

Not on a house. The noise people remember comes from metal on a barn or carport with nothing underneath.

On a home, metal goes over solid decking, underlayment, and an insulated attic. Testing cited by McElroy Metal puts rain on a complete metal roof assembly within a few decibels of shingles. Inside the house, most people cannot tell the difference. The attic insulation does most of that work.

The cost question, over the life of the roof

Up-front price is where shingles win. The math gets closer when you stretch it out.

Ask yourself one question first: how long will you own this house?

  • Selling in five to ten years? Architectural shingles are almost always the smarter buy. You get a new roof, a transferable manufacturer warranty, and a strong selling point without paying for decades you will not use.
  • Staying 15 to 20 years? Either option works. This is where looks, fire exposure, and heat comfort decide it.
  • Staying 25 years or more, or building your forever home? Metal starts to pay for itself. A shingle roof will likely need replacing once in that window. A good metal roof should not.

Insurance is part of the picture too. In Butte County, carriers look hard at roof age and fire resistance. A newer roof of either type helps. Our article on roof age and homeowners insurance explains what underwriters are asking for right now.

If you are weighing the bigger budget picture, start with what a roof replacement costs in Northern California.

Solar on metal vs. shingles

Plenty of Chico homes have solar or plan to add it. Both roofs can carry panels.

Standing seam metal has one clear advantage: panels can mount to the seams with clamps, so the roof itself is not drilled. On shingles, every mount is a penetration that needs proper flashing. Done right, both are watertight. What matters most is that the roof under the panels has enough life left to outlast them. Read solar panels and your roof before you sign a solar contract.

Which neighborhoods suit which roof

Style matters. A roof is the biggest visible surface on most houses.

  • The Avenues, Barber, and Chapmantown. Older homes with character usually look right in architectural shingles in a period-appropriate color. Some craftsman homes wear dark metal beautifully.
  • California Park, Canyon Oaks, and newer subdivisions. Check your HOA first. Many limit materials and colors. Shingles are the most common approval; some HOAs now allow metal shingles or standing seam in muted colors.
  • Forest Ranch, Cohasset, Paradise, and Magalia. Metal fits the setting and the fire exposure. It is our most common recommendation above the Valley floor.
  • Rural Durham, Orland, and Hamilton City. Metal on the house matches shops and barns and stands up to farm-country wind.

What does not change between the two

Whichever material you choose, these decide whether the roof lasts:

  1. A full tear-off to the deck, with rotten boards replaced.
  2. A quality synthetic underlayment or self-adhered membrane in valleys and at eaves.
  3. New flashing at every wall, chimney, skylight, and pipe.
  4. Balanced attic ventilation with ember-resistant vents. See why attic venting matters.
  5. A permit and inspection with the City of Chico or Butte County.

A premium material over a poor installation is still a poor roof.

How we help you decide

We do not have a favorite material. We have roofed this county since 1950, and we install architectural shingles, architectural metal, and tile because each one is the right answer for some homes.

When you call, we look at the roof, the attic, the slope, your fire zone, and your plans for the house. Then we give you a written comparison with both options priced side by side. You make the call.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a metal roof worth it in Chico?

It is worth it if you plan to stay in the home 20 years or longer, live in a foothill fire zone, or want a roof that handles summer heat with less wear. If you expect to sell within ten years, architectural shingles usually give you better value.

How long does a metal roof last compared to shingles in the Sacramento Valley?

Architectural shingles typically last about 20 to 30 years in the North Valley, with the hottest south and west slopes wearing first. A well-installed metal roof commonly lasts 40 years or more because UV and heat do not break it down the way they do asphalt.

Are metal roofs better for wildfire areas?

Both Class A metal and Class A shingle assemblies carry the highest fire rating. Metal has practical advantages in the foothills: no exposed gaps for embers on standing seam panels, and a smooth surface that sheds pine needles. Ember-resistant vents and clean gutters matter just as much as the material.

Can you put a metal roof over existing shingles in Chico?

Some metal systems can go over one layer of shingles, but we rarely recommend it here. A full tear-off lets us inspect and repair the decking, and a complete Class A assembly is easier to document for permits and insurance.

Does a metal roof make the house hotter or louder?

No. Lighter metal finishes reflect heat and can keep the attic cooler than dark shingles. Over solid decking and an insulated attic, rain on a metal roof sounds about the same as rain on shingles from inside the house.
